Volunteer Driving Instructor

Description: IRCOM’s Newcomer Driver’s Education Program (NDEP) is looking for 16 individuals to assist newcomers with their in-car training. These individuals must be encouraging, skilled drivers, and meet MPI’s criteria for a supervising driver: • Hold a valid Class 1F, 2F, 3F, 4F or 5F licence; • Have held a Class 5F licence for at least three years; • Have their own insured vehicle. The tasks of the Driving Instructor will be to: • Meet with the NDEP staff to set a training schedule for each participant. • Meet participants at IRCOM and take them from there to locations appropriate for the driving skills they are practicing. • Supervise participants as they practice their in-car driving skills. • Provide tips and feedback to participants to improve their driving skills. • Return participants to IRCOM when the training session is done. • Communicate with IRCOM staff any questions, concerns, or ideas for improving the program. • Be the sole occupant of the front seat of the vehicle, besides the driver. • Always be in a condition to lawfully assume operation of the motor vehicle, including maintaining consciousness. • Maintain a Blood Alcohol Concentration less than .05. • Make use of their own vehicle for instruction times. This vehicle must be insured to 5,000,000$ of third party liability. IRCOM will cover the expense for upgrading to this coverage from whatever current coverage volunteers have. Volunteers are asked to volunteer approximately two hours a week for a minimum of three months. Volunteers must clear a Child Abuse Registry check and a Canadian Criminal Record check. Both may be conducted through IRCOM. The Driving Instructors will have access to all the benefits offered to IRCOM volunteers. This includes an orientation to volunteering at IRCOM, access to any trainings offered to IRCOM volunteers such as First Aid/CPR and other trainings, as well as any trainings related to the specific role. It also includes recognition at Volunteer Recognition Events and a reference reflecting the contribution made to IRCOM.
Volunteer Receptionist

Description: IRCOM is looking for 4-5 individuals to provide reception and assist with administrative support for the Newcomer Driver Education Program (NDEP) that operates out of 400B Logan Avenue. Responsibilities for this position include: • Greet walk-ins and provide some basic information to direct their inquiries • Be available to receive deliveries • Allow building access to regularly scheduled cleaners • Answer phone enquiries and take messages when appropriate • Check voicemails and respond with basic information • Check emails and respond with basic information If there is time and interest, volunteers may also: • Help make childcare snack • Keep the kitchen tidy • Play with the children in childcare • Prepare resources for IRCOM’s Newcomer Literacy Initiative classes • Prepare games for childcare During slow times, volunteers are also welcome to read, study, or some other activity to fill the time. Qualifications: • Good communication skills • Good interpersonal skills • Basic computer skills, including the use of MS Office and the internet • A high level of professionalism • Experience with customer service is an asset • Fluency in multiple languages is an asset Volunteers are asked to come for a 2.5 hour shift once a week from 9-11:30. Volunteers must clear a Child Abuse Registry Check and a Canadian Criminal Record Check. These checks may be conducted at no cost to the volunteer through IRCOM. Volunteer training will be provided. Reference sheets with basic information for clients will be provided. A supervisor will be onsite and available for questions at all times. This position will be available as of September 14th, 2015
Ride Don't Hide - Hand out Refreshments

Description: On Sunday, June 26th we are holding our Ride Don't Hide cycling event to raise awareness about mental health/illness, fight the stigma, and fundraise for mental health services. There will be 3 rides throughout the morning (see www.ridedonthide.com for more details). Help set up and hand out refreshments to participants of the rides and partake in the celebration. Event is taking place at Fort Whyte Alive and we are currently working on arranging transportation for volunteers who need it from the Canadian Mental Health Association at 930 Portage Ave. to Fort Whyte Alive and back again. Group volunteer orientations will take place on Tuesday, June 21 from 6:30 - 7:30 pm and Wednesday, June 22 from 12:00 - 1:00 pm (you must attend one of these or make alternate arrangements). Ride Don't Hide Route Marshal

Description: On Sunday, June 26th we are holding our Ride Don't Hide cycling event to raise awareness about mental health/illness, fight the stigma, and fundraise for mental health services. There will be 3 rides throughout the morning (see www.ridedonthide.com for more details). Course control is one of the most important roles and will require the largest number of volunteers. Marshals will direct the cyclists and monitor course crossings so spectators don't get hit by bikes on the course. Bonus: you are right where the action is taking place! Feel free to bring some noisemakers and get ready to cheer our riders on! Culture Days & Nuit Blanche Volunteer Opportunity

Nuit Blanche Winnipeg (NBW) is a free all-night exploration and celebration of contemporary art that takes place on the Saturday of the Culture Days weekend from dusk to dawn. Held annually since 2010, the events and exhibits attract thousands of people to the three zones of activity: St. Boniface, Downtown and the Exchange District. Canada 150 Celebration at Tyndall Park

Personal Disaster Assistance (PDA) Responder

Description: Disaster Management – Personal Disaster Assistance (PDA) Responder Volunteer – Two (2) Years, Renewable Various locations throughout Manitoba The Canadian Red Cross Society, a non-profit, humanitarian organization dedicated to helping Canadians, as well as the most vulnerable throughout the world, is seeking a Personal Disaster Assistance (PDA) Responder for Disaster Management (DM). Reporting to the PDA Supervisor, the PDA Responder will be responsible to fill various on-call shifts on a 24/7 schedule that includes weekends, holidays and evenings. When called on to respond, the PDA Responder will be required to provide relief directly to clients in need of assistance. Job Summary: The Personal Disaster Assistance (PDA) Team is activated to respond and provide assistance for up to the first 72 hours following a disaster. The incumbent of this position is responsible for conducting a needs assessment to determine the needs of the clients. The PDA Responder will provide, as appropriate to agreements with the local authorities, Emergency Social Services (ESS) for relief, referral services and direct assistance for recovery, as well as, works with the PDA Supervisor to plan and organize ongoing preparedness activities. They may be asked to deliver services during a large-scale emergency response in their community. Responsibilities/Activities: Responsibility 1. Disaster Response Activities: Conduct client needs assessments to determine immediate, short and long-term needs of clients; Provide appropriate services based on the Technical Standards and the National Disaster Assistance Guidelines; Provide referrals to partner agencies and other community based groups; Communicate and report on progress, as appropriate, to the PDA Supervisor; Provide comfort to clients; Complete necessary paperwork (i.e. Goods and Services Vouchers, Client Needs Assessments and others as appropriate); Communicate complex cases to PDA Supervisor for provision of appropriate case management services; Participate in operational debriefings and provide suggestions for improvement. Responsibility 2. Preparedness Activities Activities: Actively engage in team preparedness activities including emergency planning and kit preparedness; Attend meetings as required; Support PDA Supervisor in materials/inventory management; Support with supplier agreements, as appropriate; Support the PDA Supervisor in planning and organizing services. Contributes to a healthy and safe working environment. Performs other duties, as required. Qualifications: The incumbent must have the commitment to the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Movement and model the core competencies of the CRCS: team excellence, service excellence, accountability and results focused. This position requires a satisfactory Canadian criminal record reference check. This position requires a satisfactory vulnerable sector check Valid driver's license is required if driving for society business; clear driver’s abstract (3 years) required if using Red Cross vehicles; access to transportation is mandatory Education and Experience: Completion of High School Diploma and/or equivalent experience; Experience in an emergency environment is an asset. Knowledge: Understanding of Red Cross role in disaster response, relief and recovery, an asset Computer literacy is an asset Skills and Abilities: Language requirements vary - responders must be able to deliver services as appropriate Customer service skills - provides comfort and care, patience in dealing with upset clients, active listening to understanding needs, finding a solution and good communication so client understands services available and how to obtain Communication skills - verbal and non-verbal cues, active listening, clearly able explain self and confirm understanding from client Attention to detail - accuracy in completing forms, giving information, completing necessary paperwork Ability to work well within a team - share information, be helpful, respectful, approachable, build strong relationships Dependable - timely, takes initiative and ownership of work, completes tasks without being asked or with little supervision Remains calm during a crisis - does not allow emotions to get in the way, does not take things personally, stays positive, responds decisively Working Conditions: Potential for responding in disaster areas, as well as difficult and unstable conditions (environmental, physical, social, etc.) and uncomfortable conditions (noise, odours, smoke, humidity, vulnerable clients). These environments have the potential to affect the overall wellbeing of the responders on site. The incumbent may need to stand for several hours. The incumbent may need to lift up to 20 kg of relief supplies during preparedness activities and during response. Ability to respond during non-traditional hours (i.e. late night or weekends) and long hours of work in a demanding context. Ability to be on-call when scheduled, as required. A valid provincial driver’s licence and First Aid Certification (training provided) is required. This position also requires a successful Canadian criminal record check with vulnerable sector screening. Candidates must be 18 years of age or older.
